Abstract

Sustainability in housing has tended to be addressed in a segmented manner with product criteria being examined in isolation [1], such as energy efficiency, passive solar design, renewable energy technologies, zero carbon approaches, behavior change and materials [2-8]. The housing construction sector has also attempted to identify and address sustainability in their processes [9-13]. This literature shows the challenges of producing a product that is long lived and needs to meet diverse requirements such as functionality, cultural sensitivity and local climatic conditions [10], in a context where industry diversity, fragmentation and complexity can make it difficult to assign sustainability responsibilities [14].
