Abstract

The majority of small (< 50kW) wind turbines utilize permanent magnet (PM) generators . These machines offer advantages that include relatively simple control and the ability to directly connect to the rotor without a gearbox. To achieve direct-drive, the PM generators are built in a multi-pole configuration that significantly increases the complexity, weight and price of the machine.
