Smart Grid System Using Electricity from Photovoltaics, Renewable Sources and Alternative Fuels
Abstract
Smart grid system installed in Technology Centre Ostrava (TCO) of VŠB-Technical University of Ostrava consists of a solar photovoltaic system, fuel cells, continuous pyrolysis unit, gas fired cogeneration unit, power converters and battery packs. It combines electric power generated by photovoltaics with electric power produced by cogeneration unit. Generated electric power can be either stored in battery system or converted by electrolysis and stored as gaseous hydrogen. This is very convenient in terms of energy needs. In pyrolysis unit, the biofuels or alternative fuels can be thermochemically converted into energy rich products and gas for cogeneration unit. The whole system that is equipped with environment-friendly technologies reducing production of waste is in compliance with the new energy policy of the European Union.
