Abstract

This work provides a review on latest research on CO2 gas hydrate materials and their applications in cold thermal energy storage (CTES). A summarisation on remaining technical issues and challenges of this technology is provided. The challenges include high-pressure and low-temperature phase equilibrium conditions of CO2 gas hydrates, unpredictable and undesirable induction time, supercooling, limited gas mass transfer and heat transfer, limited evidence for memory effect, additive impairment, difference between freezing and melting temperature, needs for temporary CO2 gas storage in CTES systems, technical issues in using CO2 hydrate slurry, and high capital and operational cost. Latest research outcomes over the last decade that have addressed or will be able to address these challenges are discussed in this paper.
