Participatory Videos to Teach the Use of Renewable Energy Systems. A Case Study from Rural Nepal
Abstract
Educating citizens about renewable energy systems is a global trend and the use of videos herein is a central instructive component. Very little is known, however, how participatory videos can be leveraged in rural areas involving villagers with low levels of literacy and formal education. This gap is addressed by using and researching the use of participatory videos in the Nepalese Himalayan area, with the data collection being carried out from April to May 2019. The evaluation will explore how local people use participatory, instructional videos in constructing and maintaining high-altitude greenhouses using structured observation. Secondly, deploying an experimental approach, it will be examined whether the additional use of these videos is more effective in helping families improve the status of their high-altitude greenhouses than verbal instructions alone. It is expected that both the quantitative and qualitative findings of the study make a relevant contribution to this emerging field of research and practice.
