Optimization and Techno-Economic Assessment of 50 MWe Solar Tower Power Plant for Different Climatic Zones in Pakistan
Abstract
Optimal sizing of solar tower power plant (STP) with full load thermal energy storage (TES) hours and solar multiple (SM) is a challenge to reduce the overall cost of the system and increase system outputs. The multi objective optimization, comparison and feasibility analysis of 50MWe concentrated STP were performed at nine stations, receiving more than 1600 kWh/m2 average annual direct normal irradiance (DNI), using an economic model of Pakistan. This study also reviews technique to optimize SM and TES hours for each station with no back-up system. Optimized design parameters with their effects on system outputs such as capacity factor (CF) and levelized cost of electricity (LCOE) have been estimated. It was observed that the system outputs depend on SM, TES hour and DNI value of location. Khuzdar was found with low LCOE of 6.67 ¢/kWh and high CF of 80.8% with salt (60% NaNO3, 40% KNO3). It is proposed that Khuzdar is best-suited place for plant installation having lowest LCOE and highest CF among nine stations.
