Abstract

There is a huge demand for heating of rural houses in Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau (QTP), China, because of the high altitude, cold changeable weather. At present, coal was the main heating fuel used by local residents. Abundant solar energy resources in QTP provide a good foundation for the utilization of passive solar energy techniques. Based on the main two characters of rural houses, layout of courtyard and low high-density. This paper analyzed the low-cost passive solar techniques (L-CPST) utilization for rural houses in QTP. Firstly, passive solar techniques were used in rural houses were extracted form field investigation and literature resource. Secondly, two main L-CPST were adopted by local residents were discussed by software simulation and field questionnaire. Thirdly, Factors like coal consumption for heating, indoor air daylight environment etc. about these two practices were discussed. Finally, suggestions on the L-CPST for low high-density rural houses in QTP were given. Key-words: low-cost passive solar techniques, low high-density, rural houses, Qinghai-Tibetan plateau
