Comparative Techno-Economic Analysis of High Temperature Heat Pump and Parabolic Trough Collector System for Industrial Steam Generation: Analysis for Europe
Abstract
Industrial heat production is responsible for around 20 % of total greenhouse gas emissions in Europe. Solar thermal technologies and high temperature heat pumps can be used to produce heating with very low carbon emisison. Therefore, the main focus of this on two technologies: High-temperature heat pumps (HTHP) which is a technology with emerging potential, and parabolic trough collector (PTC) which can produce heat economically and at minimal carbon footprint compared to other technologies. The main aim of this report is to evaluate mentioned technologies' levelized cost of heat (LCOH) to fulfil a comparative techno-economic analysis. Boundary conditions for geographical constrains in Europe have been applied for setting up cases for further analysis. Results shows the cost of heat generation for both HTHP and PTC collectors with changing boundary conditions. A maximum solar fraction (SF) limit of PTC collector is defined to indicate when the LCOH for these two technologies coincides.
