Increasing Renewable Energy Integration using Advanced Residential Thermal Energy Storage

Abstract

A simulation study was conducted to develop techniques of increasing the usage of renewable, non-dispatchable energy such as wind or solar using thermal energy storage. Several electrically charged thermal energy storage systems were simulated in TRNSYS with space heating and DHW loads. The systems were simulated with four different home archetypes which were representative of typical homes in Canada using weather data for Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada. The energy storage systems increased the renewable usage factor, quite significantly in some cases, but with some caveats, such as overall energy usage increases, and in specific scenarios, the storage heat losses were larger than the heating loads, causing the homes to overheat.
