Winds of Energy Transition and Their Impacts on the Livelihoods of Coastal Communities in Ceará, Brazil
Abstract
Due to its high wind potential, the State of Ceará has played a key role in Brazil's energy transition. In this region, wind farms are primarily located along the coast, also home to traditional communities. This study aimed to analyze the impacts of wind farms on the livelihoods of traditional coastal communities in Ceará. Secondary data were obtained from previous studies and official reports that identified the effects of wind energy developments on nearby communities. The results indicate that wind farms have altered the dynamics of fishing, agriculture, and community organization. These findings highlight the need for more equitable and sustainable energy policies that integrate the perspectives of traditional communities to safeguard their livelihoods amid the expansion of the wind energy industry.
