The Iberian Peninsula Blackout: Causes, Impacts, and Solutions
Abstract
On April 28, 2025, a massive grid instability event swept across the Iberian Peninsula and parts of Southern Europe, plunging millions into a blackout lasting up to 24 hours. As one of the most significant grid-wide outages in European history, this event exposed critical vulnerabilities in regional energy reliability amidst the rapid transition to renewable energy. This paper investigates the root causes of the grid collapse and power outage—specifically the challenges of high penetration of the renewable power generation, especially the solar photovoltaic (PV) power generation—and evaluates the far-reaching socio-economic impacts of the blackout. Furthermore, it explores potential solutions, including the integration of smart grids, energy storage systems, and emerging technologies like AI and robotics as essential frameworks for mitigating future grid instability and ensuring long-term grid resilience.
