Integrating Sustainability, Technical Skills, and Cultural Competencies: Educational Insights From a Volunteer-Led Off-Grid PV Project in Peru
Abstract
This paper presents a case study of a volunteer-led off-grid photovoltaic (PV) system installation for a remote Peruvian community. Conducted in collaboration with the local host organization, Light Up the World (LUTW), the project encompassed the design, installation, and commissioning of a standalone solar energy system. While these technical objectives were central, the field trip also served as a platform for experiential learning, fostering personal growth, social awareness, and the development of intercultural competencies. Volunteer participants reported a deep appreciation for Peru and its people, enhanced understanding of energy and development challenges, improved cross-cultural communication, and strengthened sense of self. These outcomes highlight the dual impact of volunteer-based sustainable development initiatives—benefiting both the communities served and the volunteers themselves.
