Economic Feasibility of PV Self-Consumption Scenarios in Peru: a Multi-Regional Analysis Using Experimental Performance Data

Abstract

This study evaluates the economic feasibility of residential photovoltaic (PV) self-consumption systems in Peru using three years of experimental performance data and real-world market conditions. Performance metrics from PERC and HIT modules across five distinct climate zones are combined with current (2025) investment costs and electricity tariffs to compute key indicators: Levelized Cost of Electricity (LCOE), Net Present Value (NPV), and Discounted Payback Time (DPBT). The analysis also includes the emerging TOPCon technology via validated approximations. Results show that regional irradiance and local tariffs critically shape profitability, with Juliaca and Tacna offering the shortest payback periods and the highest returns. A sensitivity analysis examines self-consumption levels, system size, and incentive schemes (net metering, net billing, no compensation) on the economic performance of residential PV systems. The findings support data-driven recommendations for shaping Peru’s distributed generation (DG) policy and expanding the residential solar market.
