Resilient Solar Energy for Climate Action: Mitigation and Adaptation in the Built Environment

Abstract

Lighting systems account for a significant share of global electricity consumption and greenhouse gas emissions, making them a key target for decarbonization in the built environment. Solar lighting technologies, particularly photovoltaic systems integrated into buildings and urban infrastructures, can reduce energy demand while strengthening resilience. However, research on solar technologies, daylighting strategies, and adaptive architectural design is often addressed separately, limiting integrated approaches that support both mitigation and adaptation. To address this gap, this study develops a conceptual framework for climate-responsive solar lighting in the built environment. The research is based on an analytical synthesis of technological and architectural strategies identified in scientific literature and international reports. The results highlight the potential of integrating photovoltaic systems, daylighting design, and smart lighting technologies to support resilient and low-carbon built environments.
