Energy Efficiency in Urban Spaces: a Comparative Analysis Between Traditional Photovoltaic Systems and Solar Trees

Abstract

This study compares traditional horizontal and verticalized photovoltaic (PV) systems, such as Solar Trees, to evaluate their performance in space-constrained urban areas. Employing digital modeling and simulations, the case study considered a public park in Vila Velha (Brazil), where parameters such as monthly energy production, energy density, and shading losses were analyzed. The results indicate that the horizontal system generates 49, 3 % more energy in absolute terms; however, the vertical system exhibits an energy density almost three times higher, optimizing space utilization. Despite the higher shading losses in the vertical system, its configuration allows for the integration of additional functionalities and aesthetic value, making it advantageous in locations with limited space. Thus, Solar Trees constitute a promising alternative for maximizing urban energy efficiency.
