Solar Radiation Indices as Urban Planning Tools: Modeling and Application in Florianópolis

Abstract

This study proposes a generative methodology for urban form modeling guided by solar performance, applied to the continental area of Florianópolis, Brazil. The approach integrates parametric modeling, solar radiation simulation, and morphological analysis to explore how urban densification affects solar accessibility. Implemented in Rhinoceros 3D, Grasshopper, and Ladybug Tools, the workflow follows four stages, environment, selection, organization, and simulation, and evaluates four temporal scenarios (2003, 2013, 2023, and a projected future). Results show a progressive 64% reduction in total envelope radiation from 2003 to the future scenario, with façades being the most affected by shadowing. Generative simulations revealed that adjusting spacing, orientation, and height distribution can enhance solar exposure by up to 40% without reducing density. The methodology, still under experimental testing, demonstrates potential for integrating solar performance into volumetric planning, enabling compact yet climatically adaptive cities.
