Second-life photovoltaics in practice: Performance results from a Brazilian case

Abstract

Photovoltaic (PV) systems using second-life silicon PV modules can support a just and sustainable energy transition, especially due to their social impact. To enable large-scale application, it is crucial to validate their performance post-decommissioning. In this study, PV modules that operated for almost 22 years as an off-grid system, and were previously approved for reuse in an earlier study are now being monitored under new conditions at the Laboratório Fotovoltaica/UFSC. The modules are installed in two configurations: (1) an on-grid rooftop system and (2) an outdoor test bench for individual characterization. This is currently the only documented lab-based monitoring of second-life PV systems in Brazil. The investigation combines individual electrical testing, system performance analysis, and simulation under ideal conditions. Preliminary results support the assessment of reuse feasibility and degradation, contributing to circular economy strategies.
