Integration of Photovoltaic Systems in University Buildings: A Retrofit Project at The Technology Center of the Federal University of Rio De Janeiro

Abstract

This study examines the technical, economic, and environmental feasibility of installing photovoltaic systems integrated into Block I of the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ) Technology Center (TC), considering rooftop, façade, and carport walkway. The systems are dimensioned using SolarEdge software, considering area, modules, peak power, and orientation. Annual energy is projected at 1,811 MWh for the roof, 67 MWh for the façade, and 414 MWh for the carport, totaling 2,292 MWh and reducing 363 tons of CO₂ annually, equivalent to 16,685 trees. Financial indicators, including acquisition, operation, maintenance, inverter replacement, and a 30-year lifespan, show an LCOE of USD 0.0452/kWh, IRR of 23.1%, Payback of 5.4 years, NPC of USD 1.49 million, and annual revenue of USD 232,227.24, proving economic viability. TC’s energy use varies from 821 to 1,089 MWh/month, with the system saving about 20% annually. The carport with a permanent educational exhibition fosters environmental awareness, renewable energy education, and engagement within the academic community, while providing additional power generation and vehicle protection. The façade integration serves as a model for sustainable retrofitting, reconciling heritage preservation with energy modernization.
