Performance and Energy Gains of Bifacial PV Technologies Across Different Albedo Conditions
Abstract
This study evaluates the energy gains of single-axis-tracker bifacial systems across different albedo levels. Results show that high-albedo surfaces can yield up to more as much as 9% additional annual energy compared to the reference natural ground. The study was carried out in two phases: the first tested modules with p-type PERC cells, while the second phase, reflecting a market update, focused on n-type technology now mainstream for their higher bifaciality, lower degradation and reduced temperature losses. A comparison between p-type and n-type systems under identical albedo conditions validated the benefits of n-type cells. The methodology included data of front and rear irradiance, module operating temperature and power output, and calculating key energy indicators, such as yield. The results confirm the impact of albedo on bifacial gain and highlight the technical benefits of optimizing ground reflectivity for large-scale solar PV plant performance.
